Working in my flower garden

Stephanie Cohen

I love to paint large, colorful, abstract paintings of flowers. I grow the flowers in my garden and then arrange the picked flowers to take photos of them. I focus on sections of the flowers and paint a magical landscape that one could enter.

I am currently working on a series of paintings which stem from isolation during the pandemic. I am immunocompromised and take medications that put me at high risk for severe COVID. I have had to be more cautious about reentering the world. This series, “Good Flying Weather” plays with the idea of escaping the confines of our reality. It draws on images of dancers, videos of dance performances, months of wistful looking out of the window and obervations of windy weather. When it looks and feels like you could lift off and fly, that is good flying weather. The kind of weather where you fly in your dreams.

During the COVID lockdown in 2020 I began painting dog portraits from photographs as a way of connecting with friends and family who I couldn’t spend time with. I paint pet portraits on commission because they bring so much joy.
